In September the year suddenly seems to be sloping sharply away towards Christmas. And yet, in reality, September doesn’t quite belong to autumn. In a good year — and maybe this will be one of them — you can still squeeze in a weekend barbecue or two before the weather shows its teeth. It feels a bit early to be thinking about stews and risottos and all the other edible companions of colder days and longer nights. In any case, there is a last bite of summer bounty to be had before autumn’s fruitfulness arrives in earnest.

I think I have discovered the eighth sign of ageing — the English country-garden fantasy. Since I turned 55, I have begun to picture myself sitting in the sort of cottage garden that is favoured by the victims on Midsomer Murders. It isn’t big, but it has a definite blowsy charm. There is a lawn patterned with daisies, a scattering of hollyhocks, foxgloves, poppies and wisteria, a rambling rose and an old apple tree in a pool of dappled shade. It is the kind of garden where you could invite the vicar for tea.
