German PoW behind the creation of a range of Welsh sports cars

In the late 1950s, the German-born engineer Bernard Friese, who has died of cancer aged 82, joined forces with Giles Smith, a village butcher, to conceive and build the only truly Welsh sports car. It took its name, the Gilbern, from its creators' first names: the neat glass-fibre bodied coupes first appeared in 1959 and continued until 1973, when the arrival of VAT made build-it-yourself sports cars much less attractive. Unusually for a component car, the Gilbern also made the transition to being fully built.

Forced use of biofuels could hit food production, EU warned PDF Print E-mail

Area the size of Ireland could be lost to conventional farming as global warming accelerates, says environmental study. Plans to make European motorists use more biofuels could take an area the size of Ireland out of food production by 2020 and accelerate climate change, a study has found.

The report by the independent Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP) is based on plans that countries have submitted to the EU detailing how they intend to meet their legal requirement to include 10% of renewable energy in all transport fuels by 2020.

New speed camera can catch drivers committing five offences at once PDF Print E-mail

Motoring organisations give promised system a cautious welcome - as long as it is not used just to raise money

A speed camera designed to catch motorists committing up to five offences at the same time could be heading to Britain's roads. As well as catching speeding motorists, the Asset camera should be able to pick out drivers who are not wearing seatbelts and accurately measure distances between moving cars to identify tailgating.

To anyone puzzled as to why car makers are dabbling in the bicycle market, two words: Alan Sugar. Interviewed for a documentary last year, the prickly peer spent much of the programme showing off his trio of £7,000 Pinarello racers. The intention was to station one in each of his three main homes, he explained in that permanently tetchy rasp, but he loves them too much to leave them alone. Now they, too, travel by private jet.

A speed camera designed to catch motorists committing up to five offences at the same time could be heading to Britain's roads. As well as catching speeding motorists, the Asset camera should be able to pick out drivers who are not wearing seatbelts and accurately measure distances between moving cars to identify tailgating.

Asset (advanced safety and driver support for essential road transport) can also note number plates and recognise cars with out-of-date tax discs and no insurance.
